Associated Computer Science Research Institutes
Computer science in Saarland reaches beyond the computer science department at Saarland University. Further high-ranking computer science research institutes of international renown are located in direct proximity on the university campus. And Schloss Dagstuhl is nearby in Northern Saarland.
The Max Planck Institute for Informatics (MPI) is devoted to cutting-edge research in informatics with a focus on algorithms and their applications in a broad sense. Our research ranges from foundations (algorithms and complexity, programming logics) to a variety of application domains (computer graphics, geometric computation, constraint solving, program verification, databases and information systems, and computational biology/bioinformatics).
The Max Planck Institute for Software Systems was established in November 2004. Its charter is to conduct world-class basic research in all areas related to the design, analysis, modeling, implementation and evaluation of complex software systems. It joins over 80 other institutes run by the Max Planck Society, which conduct world-class basic research in medicine, biology, chemistry, physics, technology and the humanities.
Founded in 1988, German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) today is one of the largest nonprofit contract research institutes in the field of innovative software technology based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods. DFKI is focusing on the complete cycle of innovation - from world-class basic research and technology development through leading-edge demonstrators and prototypes to product functions and commercialization.
Its mission is disease to therapy with bioinformatics
- Setting up a virtual biology laboratory for modeling and simulating biochemical processes.
- Emphasis on providing bioinformatics tools for development and manufacture of new drugs, and for optimization of therapeutic strategies.
- Produce bioinformatics graduates who possess excellent theoretical and methodological knowledge, able to use existing tools and to develop new methods.
Schloss Dagstuhl is an internationally renowned Center for the organization of scientific computer science conferences, the support of research in informatics, and serves as an institution for facilitating research, scientific education, continuing education seminars and workshops, cutting-edge computer science research at the international forefront and the transfer of knowledge between research and application across all areas of computer science. It is located just some 40 km north of Saarland University in a gorgeous natural landscape of lush green hills and forests.
