Application deadlines are:
May 15th for the winter term starting mid October of the same year
November 15th for the summer term starting mid April of the following year

Before completing the application form, please read the following information carefully. It is meant to help you to submit a complete application. Any incomplete application will not be taken into consideration. Completed applications handed in after the deadline will automatically be reviewed in the decision round for the following semester.

Your application to the masters program in Computer Science has to be made via the Online Application System (OAS) of the Department of Computer Science. Here the equivalence of the previous degree to our Bachelor of Science at Saarland University will be checked. Therefore, you will be asked to provide the main information on your application, and you also need to upload your application files, see below.

Only documents in electronic form are needed for the application!
The completed application form must be accompanied by the following documents in German, English or French; translations must be submitted with documents in other languages. When your application (including the recommendation letters sent by the referees) becomes complete, you will get a confirmation email!

Documents for application

These documents have to be submitted in pdf-format via the upload interface:

  • A curriculum vitae highlighting relevant course work, major academic achievements, and prior research experience, including published or communicated research results
  • A personal statement explaining your motivation and the reasons for pursuing our masters program in Computer Science. Please avoid superficial answers.
  • A copy of your GRE Score and the GRE Subject Score ( www.gre.org ). This is optional, but please note that standardized ratings, especially the GRE, are helpful in assessing your aptitude.
  • A copy of your TOEFL (the code of our University, Dept. of Computer Science is 8399), CPE or IELTS score (www.toefl.org ; www.cambridge-efl.org; www.ielts.org ). Please note: Exceptions are only made for native speakers and those who hold a degree of a University in a country, where English is the mother tongue. A degree from India or Pakistan will not be considered as valid English proficiency proof. It is not sufficient to state that English is the language of instruction at your current university!
For German students, it is sufficient if they can prove high school knowledge of English (Grund- oder Leistungskurs in der Oberstufe). If not, they have to provide a TOEFL or IELTS score.

As a guideline, the following scores are expected:
TOEFL (internet based): at least 95 out of 120
TOEFL (computer based): at least 240 out of 300
TOEFL (paper based): at least 540 out of 677
IELTS (academic test): at least 6.5 out of 9
  • Two letters of recommendations of professors or employers. They have to be sent to us directly by the referees, as prompted by the OAS. Please note that only official affiliation e-mail addresses and recommendation letters with letterhead and signature will be considered valid. Alternatively, you can send us the recommendations in sealed envelopes; under no circumstances the confidential recommendation letters can be uploaded or sent to us by the applicant. It is the applicant's responsibility to inform their referees of their application and make sure that the letters reach us on time.
  • Academic certificates as copies of the following: All certificates must be accompanied by an explanation of the grading system. Copies of certificates must be officially authenticated. The accuracy of the translation must be confirmed.
    • school-leaving certificate giving the right of entry to higher education in the applicant´s home country with individual grades
    • all university end-of-year exam certificates (with individual grades)
    • university degree certificate or diploma indicating the final grade(s) / GPA. Please do not apply if the CGPA of your Bachelor degree is under 75%! ( Look at our webpage about Academic Performance / equivalence to a B. Sc. of Saarland University)
    • For applicants from the Peoples's Republic of China and from Mongolia: We will not accept your application without the official certificate of the APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) in China/Mongolia.

We will inform you as soon as the decision has been made! After the deadline the masters committee needs a few weeks to review all applications in detail.

Admitted applicants automatically apply for a fellowship of the International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS). There are no further documents needed. However, the Max Planck Institute does NOT offer a master program, so please only contact them if you are interested in a Ph.D. position there.

Please take care to have your original documents available. You will need those for final enrolment in case your application has been successful. Of course, the original documents will be compared to the scanned copies of the application.
